Senescence Celebration

Celebrate the completion of another year’s growth of the kelp forests and the beginning of a new season of renewal, which we hope will be even more robust than the last.
“Senescence” is a term that describes the process of cells deterioration with age and marks a beautiful and important moment in an organisms life journey. Bull kelp, which is an annual species, naturally begins to senesce in the fall when its stipe reaches maturity, its blades release their sori, and its spores drift to the bottom of the ocean to settle on the reef where it attaches. The spores lie dormant on the seafloor through winter, and then the bull kelp life cycle begins again the following spring.
At this Saturday evening event, we will hear from leading scientists and individuals on the outcomes from the summer's efforts to revitalize kelp forests in the local waters.
We will also celebrate this cycle of growth with the opening of the Momím Wené art exhibit at the Mendocino Art Center bringing together Indigenous arts that honor the sacred waters, with delicious foods from the sea and offerings of local wine, beer and kelp beverages. Catered by Fog Eater Café of Mendocino. Please join us.
