Post Parade Fun outside The Mendocino Art Center
Mendocino Art Center - Outside • 45200 Little Lake Street, Mendocino, CA
Kelp art, science, and dance converge outside of Mendocino Art Center—join the celebration and Move Like a Kelp!
Kelp enthusiasts will gather at the Mendocino Art Center at the conclusion of the Seaweed Spectacle Parade. Inside, the Gallery will be hosting the opening of “Momim Wene”, and the kelp basket sculptures of Lucy Traber. Outside, kids will explore for ocean treasure and tables will be hosted by over ten groups involved with kelp restoration including representatives from the Tolowa Dee Ni Kelp Guardians project and the Kashia Pomo Coastal Reserve, as well as the Food Sovereignty Lab from CalPoly Humbolt. At 1:30 a performance of All Dripping with Tangles Green will bring us into the complex reproductive cycles of bull kelp:
"...all dripping in tangles green... is a dance and music exploration of concepts from Mei Blundell’s PhD research on how kelp life stages contribute to population-level resilience following marine heatwaves. You will hear and see motifs representing each of four life stages: gametophytes, juveniles, adults, and drift kelp. Our kelp population will endure and recover from two devastating marine heatwaves. Adult survivors drop their spores when conditions are safe, and the individuals move in and out of synchrony as generations accumulate. After the second marine heatwave, tiny glittery gametophytes test the waters while waiting for a safe time to rebuild our resilient kelp population. This work features original music composed by Max Gibson and recorded by the Del Sol Quartet, and choreography by Linda Bair and performed by Linda Bair Dance Company."
This will get us all inspired to get up and Move Like a Kelp! At 1:50 whoever feels like dancing and moving will migrate into the MAC courtyard for a Kelp Improv class led by renowned choreographer Linda Bair.
