The Mendocino Art Center becomes KelpFest’s creative hub for the weekend, featuring hands-on workshops, artist demonstrations, gallery tours, and exhibitions inspired by California’s coastal ecosystems.
Meet exhibiting artists, participate in hands-on activities, and explore how art can deepen our relationship with our ocean. This is a welcoming opportunity to experience the creative side of KelpFest.
Featured Installation: Swept Away by Gail Wight is a video installation projected from ceiling to floor. It’s a visceral response to our coastal crisis, an ode to the stunning beauty and hidden movement of Pacific Coast algae. It’s also a glimpse of our shoreline bereft of seaweed, and a reminder of the ebb and flow of evolutionary change.
A central pool of sea stars is surrounded by five pools of lush seaweeds. Slowly the seaweeds becomes ragged and then slowly diminish or disappear. Then the process reverses, the seaweed rebounds, and the cycle begins anew. This ten minute loop repeats seamlessly, endlessly.
Gail Wight is a visual artist constructing biological allegories through book arts, video, and experimental media. She holds an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute where she was a Javits Fellow, and a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art. Wight's art has been exhibited internationally and is in numerous public and private collections. She is Professor Emerita in Stanford University’s Department of Art & Art History, and is currently located at Salt Point Press in Northern California, creating odes to a disappearing watery world.
